I have seen that in many homes I have inspected. I actually have a tub in a house I own that has done the same thing. Painted tubs look good for a while, but they just about always peel. If you leave soap or other cleaners on it can damage the finish as well. I look at painting as a temporary fix for making the tub look better. It can be repainted when it starts to peel.
They can come in and scrape the paint off and the paint it again. There are some companies who offer a more permanent solution by putting a “liner” over the old tub so you actually have a new tub over your old one. This is usually a more expensive process but is much more permanent.
