The weather strip on my front door is damaged and allows air to leak in. This has not been as much of a problem in the summer, but with cold weather coming I want to fix it. How is the best way to fix this?
It does not seem as much of a problem in the summer, but it is. If your weather strip allows a ¼” opening around a door, it is like a hole in the wall that is 4” x 4”. The … Continue reading

I was wondering if you know anything about painting stucco. We have authentic stucco, and I have been wanting to paint it for some time. I have tried to do some research because I have been told you cannot paint stucco, and I am getting mixed reviews. I heard of stuff called latex, and elastomeric paint. Have you heard of either?
In most cases stucco can be painted. I would suggest an elastomeric paint, which by the way may be latex. This is a “rubberized” type paint that will hide most cracks in the stucco. In painting stucco the prep work … Continue reading

Smoke detectors cannot be used in unfinished attics because the temperature fluctuations and dust found in attics can cause the smoke detector to malfunction. What do you think?
I don’t disagree that these unfriendly areas may damage the smoke detectors or cause them to malfunction, but the way I see it for what they cost (usually around $10 – $15) you can replace them every year if needed. … Continue reading
My husband & I recently remodeled our bathroom. We did some of the work and hired some of it out. We had a plumber change the faucets and we did the tile work. We did not realize it until after we put the tile up that the plumber put the faucet too far in. Now the handle and cover will not go on. Do you know any way to fix this without tearing out the tile?
This is actually a common problem. It should be able to be corrected without removing the tile. The first thing I would suggest is to call the manufacture to see if they sell a valve or stem extension, most manufactures … Continue reading

The doors in the bedrooms in my house close by themselves unless we block them open. Do you have any suggestions? How to keep them open without using doorstops; my wife does not like the way they look.
There are a couple of things you can do to solve this without using doorstops or block the door open. They make magnetic doorstoppers that are installed on the back of the door and wall that keep the doors open … Continue reading

I lost about 50 shingles from my roof. My deductible is over $4000 and I just can afford to have the work done yet. I am afraid my roof is leaking and is going to cause serious damage. How long can I wait to replace my roof?
That is a hard question to answer. There is really no way to give you an accurate answer without inspecting your roof. But I can tell you if all you lost was shingle tabs, no large sections or areas where … Continue reading

I am looking to purchase a house that is older and has cement asbestos siding on it. I noticed that some of the siding pieces are broken and cracked. Being that these things have asbestos in them, can they be a danger if I touch them?
The siding is made of cement with asbestos fibers encased in the cement. They only way the fibers are hazardous is if they are released and breathed in. As long as you do not scrape or sand on the siding … Continue reading
