My wife wants to change the bathtub in our master bathroom. I have done some projects in my house in the past and am considering doing it myself. Do you have any suggestions?
Although it is possible to change a tub yourself it is not an easy job. Usually the hardest part is getting the new tub into the bathroom. If you choose a new “garden tub” it may be too big to … Continue reading

I have an icemaker in my house and I have been having problems lately. I figured it needed to be cleaned so I called a service company to work on it. The service man said it had a bad water valve and changed the valve and cleaned the “scum” out at the same time. It is now making clear ice, but not much of it. The service man says he has done that entire he can. Can you give me an idea of what else it could be?
If the unit is clean and water valves and sprayers are all working properly you may ask the service technician to check the Freon level. If it is low on Freon the unit may not be getting as cold as … Continue reading

I have a new house that we have lived in about one month. We have been having problems with the breaker in the master bedroom tripping all of the time. It seems trip at least once a day. All of the things that are plugged in are small new items like a lamp and an alarm clock. I just don’t understand how this could be overloading the circuit.
The problem is most likely a defective AFCI (arc fault circuit interrupter) breaker. This is a breaker that is required in all bedrooms that detects an arc, which is a fire hazard. We have found a high percentage of these … Continue reading

The lights in my house go dim every time the dishwasher starts or changes cycles. I also notice it when my wife turns on the dryer or washing machine. Is this something to be concerned about?
Your problem can be due to a couple of different things. A lot of times it is due to lose connections in the breaker panel or incoming service from the utility company. Both of these conditions should be checked and … Continue reading

We recently purchased a home and the seller said the bathtub had been painted. I had never heard of that but it looked pretty good at the time. Now I have noticed that the paint has some bubbles and it looks like it is starting to peel near the drain. I am not sure what I should do?
I have seen that in many homes I have inspected. I actually have a tub in a house I own that has done the same thing. Painted tubs look good for a while, but they just about always peel. If … Continue reading

I have noticed that the lights in my house flicker at times. They almost always flicker when the dishwasher or air conditioning unit comes on. I have noticed now that sometimes they flicker even when no appliances are on. My house is not that old so I cannot figure why it would do this. What can cause this problem?
Usually flickering lights is due to lose connections or an inadequate electrical system. Since your house is fairly new, then it is likely loose connections. The loose connections can be in your breaker panel or in the utility companies’ equipment. … Continue reading
I live in an old house that is raised off of the ground. I night I hear scratching noise in the walls. My wife thinks is mice. I put traps out but have not caught any mice. I am beginning to think it might be something else. Do you have any ideas? I was taking a shower the other night and noticed the marble panels around my tub are loose. I looked but could not see any nails or screws to tighten to try and re-secure them to the wall. Can you tell me how I should try to fix this?
Most of the times these panels are attached to the wall with some kind of adhesive or glue. What most commonly happens is the walls or panels are not cleaned well before the adhesive is applied and the panels pull … Continue reading

I am about to put my house on the market to sell and I found out that I have termites. My sister in Ohio said that no one will want to buy my house now. I don’t know what I should do?
Termites might be that kind of problem in Ohio, but in our area there are two kinds of houses, those with termites and those that will have termites. Now if there is extensive termite damage, that could present a problem, … Continue reading
