We just moved into our new home. In the kitchen there are granite counter tops. We have never had granite before, so we are not sure if there are any tips you can give us?

Congratulations on your new home.  I hope is has everything you ever wanted.  Well, granite counter tops are beautiful and relative easy to take care of.  However, they are not as durable as you might think they would be.  It … Continue reading

What is the most common thing you find, in new construction homes that you inspect, that is overlooked by the builders?

The most common deficiencies found in new construction are mis-wired outlets.  I did a new construction inspection today and found several mis-wired outlets and areas that should have GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) protection but was missing.  The only function … Continue reading

If you are buying a new home, who pays for the inspection? Is it the buyer (me) or the seller?

In the standard purchase agreement, the buyer has the option to have an inspection done on the house he is buying.  Usually the inspection is paid for by the buyer.  However, during negotiations of a purchase agreement a buyer certainly … Continue reading

Several of my doors have light that can be seen around the doors when closed. I am not sure how to go about fixing this. Can you give me some help?

This is a very important concern for energy conservation.   Well sealed openings into our home help with loss of heated or cooled air.  It is usually more noticeable in the winter because air moves from cool to warm so you … Continue reading

Can you tell me how to rid my home of fruit flies?

The small brown, red-eyed fruit fly is usually carried inside homes in fresh fruits and vegetables, most often bananas. The items in which the flies are breeding must be found and discarded in the outdoor trash. To deal with the … Continue reading

I have wood floors in my home and have been cleaning them with furniture polish since I moved in. The floors look good, but sometimes they are slippery and it is fairly expensive to keep them clean. My neighbor said I can just damp mop them and it would be ok and not hurt the floors. What can you tell me about this?

I think using furniture polish on your floors would indeed make them slippery and present a safety concern especially with older persons.  I asked my wife what she uses to clean our wood floors and she said she uses a … Continue reading

My home was recently inspected for a person who was considering the purchase of my home. When the roof was inspected the home inspector found holes in my roof from the tarps that were nailed down to prevent leaking after the recent hurricane. I had my roof repaired after the storm, but apparently there are some holes still present. Are the small nail holes that still in the roof a problem? My husband said they are not big enough to cause any leaks that would be a problem.

I too have been seeing a lot of these nail holes when inspecting roofs.  Your husband is partially correct that there will not be enough leaking to cause any problems immediately.  However, the problem is that when it rains, and … Continue reading

The other day we came home after being out of town for a couple of weeks and when I turned the faucet on in my downstairs guest bathroom the came out blue. I couldn’t believe the color of the water. It was bright blue like cool-aid. After it ran for about 1 minute the water turned normal. I asked everyone I know and no one has any idea what it was. I think most of my friends think I was making it up. Do you know what it could have been?

I hope you didn’t drink the water.  Do you have those toilet cleaners that turn the water blue?  This is why siphon break should be put on water valves.  The water was apparently siphoned from the toilet tank into the … Continue reading

The tub drain in my master bathroom is very slow. I have poured drain cleaner in the drain several times but it does not seem to help. Do you have any suggestions other can calling a plumber?

The drain is likely clogged with hair or debris from original construction (depending on the age of your home).  Usually drain cleaners will not do much to open this type of clog.  There is a plastic drain cleaner sold at … Continue reading

I have a large older home and have a very high electric bill. I am looking into the foam insulation that is sprayed on the underside of the roof. The insulation is fairly expensive and I am not sure how well it works. Do you have any experience with this type of insulation?

I actually do have experience with this type of insulation I can share with you.  I recently had the insulation sprayed into the attic of my home.  The difference in the temperature in the attic and comfort level in my … Continue reading
